of the Art, Inc. is with funding from the National
Institute of Health is developing an Arthritis Education
Campaign on arthritis pain and exercise. According
to the CDC, arthritis is the leading cause of disability
in the U.S., affecting 70 million Americans. Arthritis
affects people of all ages but the vast majority of
people with arthritis are over 45 years old. Although
it affects more women than men, arthritis is similarly
prevalent among African Americans and Whites, but is
less prevalent among Hispanics and Asians. Costs to
the U.S. economy attributable to arthritis exceed $82
billion annually.
Arthritis Education Campaign
According to the “National Arthritis Action Plan (NAAP),” one of
the barriers to many arthritis programs is the lack of exposure the program
is able to receive. State of Art, Inc is developing an Arthritis Education
Campaign for the National Institutes of Health that will contribute to the
communication and education goals outlined in the NAAP. This campaign will
focus on (1) breaking the pain cycle and (2) promoting exercise for people
with all types of arthritis and will target men and women aged 45 and older
of varying races and socioeconomic classes. The objective will be to increase
a person’s self-efficacy to perform self-management techniques in order
to break the pain cycle and engage in exercise. The campaign will include a
13-part broadcast series, which will also be packaged as videotape series,
and a companion workbook.
The initial creative plans have been
qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated by professionals
and patients. The completed materials will be evaluated
in a large national quantitative study.
