Childhood
Obesity
State of the
Art, Inc. is developing a health communication campaign
to address the growing issue of childhood obesity in
the United States. The goal of the campaign is to encourage
parents of elementary school aged children to adopt
health behaviors to prevent overweight and obesity
in their children. The three components of the campaign
will
- provide information about physical activity
and nutrition as related to overweight and obesity;
- motivate family decision-makers to adopt health
behaviors to prevent obesity;
- teach behavioral skills
to prevent obesity. The primary context of the
campaign is that
children’s
health and health behaviors affect their
health as adults.
This campaign will include
a DVD, print materials,
a website and a broadcast television special.
The
campaign will target the adult family member(s) who
are the decision makers about
food and
physical activities for the children.
Overweight and obesity
are generally caused by lack of physical
activity, unhealthy eating patterns,
or a combination
of the two, with genetics and lifestyle
both playing important
roles in determining a child's weight.
U.S. society has become very sedentary;
television,
computer and
video games contribute to children's
inactive lifestyles. Children, especially girls,
become less active as
they move through adolescence.
