"Men
and Women Managing Heart Disease" Small
Business Innovation Research Grant
February
2005
State of the Art, Inc. has received
a Small Business Innovation Research Grant from
the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute
of the National Institutes of Health to create
Men and Women Managing Heart Disease, a health
promotion series that will address self-management
of cardiovascular disease through two documentary
videos, and companion booklets.
More than 60 million people in
the U.S. have one or more forms of cardiovascular
disease (CVD) making it the leading cause of
death in the United States. Every year, there
are approximately 1,100,000 incidents of heart
attacks and 600,000 incidents of stroke.
(National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute)
(Washington, February 1, 2005) – Despite
the staggering figures that make CVD the number
one killer of Americans, CVD is a manageable
and preventable disease when people adopt heart
healthy lifestyle behaviors. In response to this
reality, State of the Art, Inc. is launching
a health promotion series to educate both families
and patients on self-management and prevention
of future CVD events.
Men and Women Managing Heart Disease includes
two videos (one for men and one for women) that
illustrate successful self-management of CVD,
based on profiles of individuals who speak candidly
about their own struggles and successes; a companion
booklet with additional information on self-management
and prevention of CVD, as well as referrals to
useful cardiovascular health organizations that
can provide personalized help.
The goals of this
series are to reduce the morbidity and mortality
attributed to CVD, particularly
in African American and Hispanic/Latino Americans.
The series strives to motivate people at a high
risk for CVD to reduce modifiable risk factors,
such as diet, exercise and smoking, and inform
caregivers of those with or at risk of CVD, to
help them support self-management activities
in those they care for.
Men and Women Managing
Heart Disease was reviewed at every stage of
production by an advisory board
of nationally recognized cardiovascular and self-management
medical professionals. These advisors include
Lawrence Appel, MD, MPH, Johns Hopkins University
Medical Institutions; Robert Carney, PhD, Department
of Psychiatry, Washington University School of
Medicine; John Farquhar, MD, Stanford University
School of Medicine, Health Research and Policy;
Keith Ferdinand, MD, Heartbeats Life Center;
Professor, Xavier College of Pharmacy; Kate Lorig,
RN, DrPH, Stanford University School of Medicine;
and Thomas Pearson, MD, PhD, Community & Preventive
Medicine, University of Rochester.
